Kampung Baru Pokok Assam is situated in the Larut Matang District in the State of Perak. It is situated about 2 KM from Taiping town. It is known as a "Chinese New Village" since 1951, but has been developed with modern basic amenities including piped water supply, electricity supply, metaled roads and proper drainage system. Other public amenities and services include a wet market, community hall, police station, post office, health clinic, school, telephone connectivity and public bus service.
It has a population of about 10,000 people with number of housing units of about 1200. Most of the housing units are detached houses. Local shops are in terraced shop units. The ethnic breakdown is about 85% Chinese, 10% Malay and 5% Indians.
Surrounding the original "New Village" area of Pokok Assam are private housing schemes, low-cost public housing scheme and a light industrial area.
50% of the population is made up of those above 40 years of age, another 30% of ages from 18 to 40 years and the reminder below 18 years of age. 70% of the population is literate (able to speak and write in at least one language). Most of the income earners work as general laboures, subcontractors in civil works or building industry, government employees or run their own small businesses. 50% of the populations are from families with family income less than RM1000 per month.
The village is under the administration of the local authority of Majlis Perbandaran Taiping. The local village committee is the Jawatankuas Kerja dan Keselamatan Kampung (JKKK).
